It couldn't have been hard for college radio stations to pick the first electronic single to spin off Discovery's new album, LP. Twelve days after the death of Michael Jackson, LP covered the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." This was no rush to cash in on tragedy. Discovery recorded the song weeks before Jackson died.
This side project of Ra Ra Riot lead singer Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij finds two indie rock artists dabbling in electronic dance music, with uneven results. Dense waves of synth and sparkly electric piano twirls make harmony on "Osaka Loop Line," the album's best track. The formula grows weary by "So Insane," where canned drums and dreary vocals recall the shallow side of '70s disco.
The King of Pop deserved a better coincidence than this.
