Winter got you down? Then don't hesitate to add "Missouri" to your personal playlist. At first listen, you figure, okay, Instead of celebrating sunshine and flowers, the sardonic lyrics careen through the phases of fading love ("You're in Missouri and I'm in misery" nails the first one ) until the heartsick swain who begins the song grows a backbone and gives his ex the final kiss-off. The tone of the music goes through some subtle changes, too, as the initial groovy vibe gives way to garage-rock snottiness. It's not a substantial piece of songcraft (for that check out their new self-titled album's lead track "James Brown with Two Heads"), but it's good, cynical fun, and the guitar solo that precedes the final verse is a ramshackle gem. An MP3 of the track are available in the related downloads at right. The Runners-Up are playing an early evening CD release party the High Noon Saloon on Friday, March 14. The Shabelles open the show at 5:30 p.m., and the happy hour cover is a mere $3. MadTracks highlights and provides MP3s of songs performed by local musicians.
