UP: Peter Kottke. The UW-Madison student and his brother Albert, a UW alum, rescue a missing South Carolina woman from the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. The brothers were on a backpacking trip when they heard a faint sound off the trail and found 52-year-old Carolyn Dorn, who had been missing for five weeks, huddled nearby. They gave Dorn food, water and firewood, then hiked for more than a day and a half to summon rescuers to the backcountry location. Dorn was weak and dehydrated, but otherwise okay.
DOWN: Overture Center. In 2006, the center's private trust fund dropped $1.7 million in value, paying out more in maintenance and debt service than it earned from investments. Income from these investments is supposed to pay for Overture's construction debt and subsidize costs; if the fund continues to lose money, city taxpayers may be asked to bail the arts center out.
