UP: UW-Madison. A federal judge rules that the university can refuse to give student fees to religious organizations on campus. The Roman Catholic Foundation filed a lawsuit against the UW, claiming the university violated its First Amendment rights by refusing to fund its activities. The judge said the UW is not prohibited from funding religious groups, but is also not required to do so.
DOWN: City of Madison. The city settles a sexual harassment lawsuit by a former employee for $80,000. Michelle Heimann, a former Streets Division employee, says she was pressured by her supervisor, Troy Clifcorn, for sex; when she refused, he gave her a bad evaluation that led to her termination. Under the settlement, Heimann is barred from working for the city of Madison again. Clifcorn still has his job, though the city has taken unspecified disciplinary action against him.
