UP: UW-Madison. The Wisconsin Alumni Association announces plans to donate $8 million to the university for a park between Memorial Union and the Red Gym, adding a pavilion and public boat launch. The park would displace 70 parking spaces. Jeff Wiesner, co-chairman of the Alumni Association Board, tells the Wisconsin State Journal: "It's hard to imagine saying the long-term vision for that space ought to be parking."
DOWN: Social services. Faced with severe cutbacks from the state, Dane County expects to reduce funding for human services by $12.6 million. Funding for emergency housing for the homeless, aid for disabled individuals, and medical help for the dangerously drunk are all likely to be reduced. Lynn Green of the Department of Human Services tells a crowd during a public hearing, "I caution us not to be too discouraged."
