There were more than 250 police out on State Street for the Halloween festivities on Saturday night and Sunday morning of last weekend. They were the human component of a law enforcement plan that included two command centers running a system of surveillance cameras, a loudspeaker sound system, and last but not least, a troop of mounted police. Described variously by observers at different times as relaxed, tense, friendly and cold, the officers ultimately cleared the 500 block of State at the party's end by approaching every last reveler remaining on the street. In all, there were 143 arrests made over the six hour party and its aftermath.
Working in collaboration with The Daily Page, The Daily Cardinal photographer Christopher Guess captured images of police -- Madison, UW, Dane County Sheriff's and Wisconsin State Patrol most prominently -- up and down State Street on Saturday night. Most of the images focus on the end of the event, when mounted police cleared the 500 block of remaining revelers in the first 30 minutes after the end of Daylight Savings Time. A photo gallery focusing on the police is available at right.
