After abandoning his plan for streetcars last week to focus more on issues like crime and water quality, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will attend Monday night's police community meeting on the north side. The north side has always been a little rough around the edges, so the stories from residents there won't be quite as surprising as the complaints heard at a similar session on the west side a couple weeks ago. But what's interesting about both of these sessions is how the rookie alders in both districts -- District 20's Thuy Pham-Remmele on the west side and District 18's Michael Schumacher on the north side -- have taken ownership of constituent beefs.
Pham-Remmele and Schumacher are just two of nine new alders on the council and it's starting to look like their presence might be responsible for a shift in city government's priorities. Pham-Remmele made it clear that the crime issue won't be shelved if she has anything to say about it and we'll see if Schumacher follows her lead. Either way, these listening sessions and the media coverage they inspire are keeping public safety on the front page.
