Starting Wednesday, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will be attending The Mayors' Institute on City Design in Chicago. The website for this conference says:
The Mayors' Institute on City Design (MICD) is a partnership program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Architectural Foundation, and the United States Conference of Mayors. Since 1986, the Mayors' Institute has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities.
"Preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities?" Now, no offense to the politicians in the crowd, but few (if any) of them are architects, artists or designers. They're policy wonks and authors of legislation. In some cases, they might even be visionaries. In the case of iconoclasts like former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, they can even be nattily attired. But are we electing them to design our cities?
