Six-week-old Anastasia Vang is found dead by paramedics in her Madison home. Police later charge the baby's mother, 23-year-old Ee Lee, with intentionally killing the child. Lee, who also has a 2-year-old son, allegedly told police she "only has enough love" for one child and regularly abused her daughter, including slamming her head onto a table. Two weeks ago, Vang's grandparents brought her to the hospital with bruises, but a Name Dane Type County social worker sent the child back home. A fire destroys a 41-unit apartment building on McKenna Boulevard on the west side. No one is injured in the blaze, which investigators later determine was started by a discarded cigarette, but the fire causes more than $3.5 million in damages and kills several pets.
Ronald Brandon, 48, is shot and killed by Madison Police Officer Matthew Kenny after he brandishes what is later determined to be a pellet gun in a threatening manner. Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard promptly clears Kenny of any wrongdoing, saying the pellet gun looked real and Brandon ignored commands to lower the weapon. Police say Brandon was possibly suicidal.
Sergei Carlson, 15, of Sun Prairie, is arrested for the asphyxiation death of his 16-year-old sister, Whitney. Both teenagers were at their mother's home in North Dakota at the time of the killing. Investigators decline to release any more details.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and state Rep. Spencer Black denounce a controversial cable TV deregulation bill now before the state Legislature. If the bill passes, the pols warn, AT&T could install refrigerator-size metal boxes in people's yards to bring video services to the city. AT&T is pushing for the bill, which would allow cable providers to apply for a statewide franchise, instead of negotiating deals with individual cities.
