Tomorrow land
Tom Tomorrow's cartoon "This Modern World" shows how far America has evolved from the world of this country's founders. Many of them fled religious oppression because they practiced the wrong religion at the wrong time or had some minor objection to church doctrine. It was a world in which they were willing to die " or kill " over these differences.
Americans now don't take such differences seriously enough to shed blood, and that is a good thing.
Last week's cartoon (5/31/2013) demonstrates the absurdity of anyone in Oklahoma (or elsewhere) after a storm thanking God for being spared when all around you are those who weren't.

Bad news and good news
Gov. Scott Walker is remarkably successful at accumulating the bona fides he needs to function on the national stage ("Republicans' Budget a Disaster for Wisconsin," 6/7/2013): gutting public unions; growing voucher schools; messing with a support system that allowed Wisconsin to be ranked number one in health care in a 2006 national survey; promulgating the doctrine that nothing natural is worth preserving at the expense of jobs; and energy and transportation policies that maximize short-term profits for the hydrocarbon extraction industry.
The good news is that we have until November 2014 to decide if we like the results of the bona fides. If we don't, we can vote out Gov. Walker and perhaps elect more civic-minded legislators.
