Josè James at Capitol Theater

Win two tickets to see Josè James and New Breed at Capitol Theater on Friday, January 16! This show is ages 6 & up. Josè James brings "Yesterday I Had the Bues: The Music of Billie Holiday" to Madison, which is already cooler than the other side of the pillow, but then he had to go ahead and get all those neat designs added to his already distinctive hair to lay upon said cooooool pillow. You know? Maaaaaan. There's a jazz jam we're all invited to join with Madison's own New Breed after James' set, too? My fingers are already snapping rhythmically in anticipation. I'm getting calluses.

Yonder Mountain String Band at Barrymore Theatre

Win two tickets to see Yonder Mountain String Band and Horse Feathers at the Barrymore Theatre on Saturday, January 31! This show is all ages. Despite some lineup changes (co-founder Jeff Austin parted ways in April; Jake Jolliff and Allie Kral are new additions) and the burden of being labeled jam-grass (ewwwww), the Colorado-based string group continue to mix technical precision with high energy performance. “Lots of people can shred,” said banjo player Dave Johnston to the Charlotte Observer on finding new members, "But just being part of the vibe that is Yonder Mountain has been the first and foremost thing." They'll bring that vibe with, along with some (hopefully) brand new material for an as-yet-untitled album due out this coming year.

Aesop Rock at Barrymore Theatre

Win two tickets to see Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and Homeboy Sandman at the Barrymore Theatre on Tuesday, February 3! This show is all ages. Known to have one of the most, if not the most extensive vocabs in hip-hop (according to Rolling Stone, for what it's worth), Aesop Rock continues to make his verbose rhymes as dense as ever since emerging as a marquee of alternative rap in the early '90s, and, as a result, provides near endless mashup opportunities, from Sufjan Stevens to The Rosebuds to Tom Waits.
