There were 1,032 people who completed the Madison Marathon on May 27, along with 2,153 in the half marathon, 447 in the 10K, 313 in the 6K, 27 in a pair of relays and one in a wheelchair.
One of the finishers in the 26.2 mile event that Sunday morning was Greg Smith of Madison, who completed his first-ever marathon in 3 hours, 29 minutes and 56 seconds. "The marathon was everything I expected and more," Smith says in a detailed report in which he recounts his approach to running the various stages of the race through central Madison neighborhoods.
"My parents and brother were out taking video and pictures on Drake St. at about mile 23," notes Smith, as he details the challenge of keeping up his pace during the final stages of the race. This footage, along with clips from the start and finish lines, were edited by his brother to create a highlights video tribute.
This video from the marathon follows below.
"I never once stopped during the race, and as soon as my legs stopped moving at the finish line I felt like I was going to fall over!" concludes Smith in his race report. "They put a medal around my neck, gave me a bottle of water, and directed me to a group of people that removed the timing chip off of my shoelaces. The crowd at the finish was great, and the day turned out as perfect as it could be."
