Last Saturday -- 07/07/07 -- marked World Hoop Day, a hula-hoop festival held in scores of cities around the planet. One of these locations was Madison, and dozens of hula-hoopers gathered at the Capitol end of State Street in the morning and at its other end on UW Library Mall in the evening. Their goal? To raise money to donate hula hoops to children's groups around the city.
One of the organizers of World Hoop Day in Madison was Danielle McIntosh, a UW student and proprietor of Hula Hoopla, her homemade hula-hoop business. "I make hoops of all kinds: standard, water weighted and bean filled," she declares. "I also specialize in collapsible hoops, which I have taken with me in international travel. There is definitely a hoop for everyone, regardless of age or size."
McIntosh reports that some 150 people turned out for the two World Hoop Day events in Madison last Saturday, and money was raised money to donate toys to the Madison Children's Museum, the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center, the Salvation Army of Dane County and the Respite Center.
