Eating on the UW-Madison campus for under $8

State Street is synonymous with UW-Madison, and some all-time favorite Badger hangouts have been on University Avenue. But when Isthmus asked our food crew to reveal their favorite campus eats under eight bucks, the choices turned out to be largely along Regent Street from Park to Monroe. >More
Five top vegan breakfast picks in Madison

Cold cereal, the typical American breakfast, is easy to make vegan. Swap the dairy milk for soy, almond or coconut milk, and you're good to go. Oatmeal is another quick, plant-based morning meal. Heading to a restaurant for breakfast, however, is where things can get a little more challenging for those who avoid meat, dairy, eggs and other animal products. >More
Satisfying vegan dishes at Madison's Asian restaurants

Asian restaurants are often go-to spots for vegans because of the easy availability of tofu and the possibility of customizing ingredients. Still, vegans sometimes encounter problems there " avoiding fish sauce, for instance. But at Madison Asian restaurants, there are many more options than just tofu. >More

It's a great time to be a vegan in Madison, especially for those who enjoy dining out. Being vegan on the UW-Madison campus: Five best bets for student herbivores

Vegan students feel welcome in Madison. That's according to Hannah West, a music education student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Not your everyday garden: Take a closer look at Olbrich

Peering into artist Robert C. Anderson's garden kaleidoscope sculpture at Olbrich Botanical Gardens provides a fitting metaphor for the park itself: The closer you look, the more there is to see (and do). Though Olbrich is open year-round, summer is a particularly festive time to visit. The outdoor gardens are at their most colorful, and the warm weather affords more opportunities to relax and have fun in what Horticulture magazine called one of the 10 most inspiring gardens in North America. >More

Few ingredients can match tofu's versatility. It can be blended into smoothies, baked into desserts, tossed into soups and stir-fries, or stand on its own as the centerpiece of an entrée. If you have never tried tofu, or you've had a bad tofu experience, I urge you not to give up. Start here, with five of Madison's tried-and-true tofu favorites. >More
Give your walls a makeover with thrifted art

Thrift stores, garage sales and auction sites like eBay can be great places to find affordable artwork for your home. Some of my favorite art pieces were thrift store finds, including a 40x40 signed abstract painting for $7.99 at St. Vincent de Paul, a large red vintage glass vase for $10 at Savers, a signed woodcut titled "Village of Ecuador" for $1 at Carousel Consignments in Janesville, and three vintage Tiki-style dessert plates for 69 cents each that I repurposed as wall art to fill an oddly shaped niche in our living room. >More
Whoopie cookies and more among Madison's vegan sweets

When vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli won Cupcake Wars on Food Network last year, I did a fist pump of victory for fellow vegans everywhere. The judges marveled at Coscarelli's moist, delicious creations baked without eggs or butter and frosted without cream cheese, validating on national television what many vegans already know. Done well, vegan cakes, pies and desserts are every bit as complex and flavorful as their non-vegan counterparts. >More

The good food is out there for vegans, but sometimes, hidden among other menu items, it can be hard to find. On my search for the best vegan food in Madison, I focused on locally owned restaurants and menu items that are always vegan, requiring no substitutions or omissions. I also gave extra points for dishes that are unique -- veggie burgers are fine, but here we're looking for something special. >More
