South Madison to host new Dane County community court

While many of the details have yet to be confirmed, Dane County's first community court is beginning to take shape, with one important piece now decided: It will be located on Madison's south side. Officials say they are also getting closer to a rough start date of this fall for the community court to begin hearing cases. The program has a long-term goal of decreasing the large racial disparity between whites and blacks in the county's criminal justice system. >More
 Mission: Prevent tragedy at UW-Madison

Chris Cole was a 10-year-old living in suburban New York when four Vietnam War protesters detonated a bomb inside UW's Sterling Hall in 1970, killing one and injuring three. Three of the four perpetrators were arrested, convicted and sentenced to prison for the bombing. The fourth, Leo Burt, remains at large for his alleged crimes. Sterling Hall, a common protest site at the time, was targeted because of the research work the university did for the U.S. military during the war. >More
 Mansion Hill development by Steve Brown Apartments gets thumbs down from Madison city staff

A city planning staff report recommends that the Madison Landmarks Commission turn down a request by Steve Brown Apartments to demolish a house at 127 W. Gilman St. in the Mansion Hill Historic District. The report also recommends that the panel reject the developer's current proposal, which calls for replacing two houses and the Highlander, a student high-rise, with three five-story brownstone apartment buildings. >More
