Tibetan Photography Show Coincides with Dalai Lama's Visit

"The Tibetan Exodus" photography exhibit is being hosted by the Fair Trade Coffee House, 418 State Street, from July 1 through August 1, 2008. The exhibit will coincide with the Madison visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, July 19-24. The opening ceremony for the photo exhibit will be Tuesday, July 1, 1:00 p.m. Geshe Sopa, director and abbot of Deer Park Buddhist Center, will be the honored guest at the event's opening. All are welcome to attend.

These previously unseen images were made available courtesy of the Shakabpa family. The family donated 50 photos from their private collection to the Wisconsin Tibetan Association (WTA) in order to:

serve as a reverberating reminder to the American public and the world of the Tibetans' continued plight preserve Tibetan history and educate the younger Tibetan generations commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan Diaspora, March 1959 coincide with the Madison visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, July 19-24, for teachings and Long Life Celebration
All proceeds and funds generated from future traveling exhibitions and sale of prints will go to WTA.

The historic photographs portray the plight of Tibetan refugees in India following their flight from the Chinese Communist takeover of Tibet in 1959. The photographs were taken by Tsepon W. D. Shakabpa (1907-1989), special officer in charge of settling and rehabilitating the refugees. Shakabpa, a native of Tibet, joined the Tibetan Government at the age of 23 and was Finance Minister from 1939 to 1951. When China occupied Tibet in 1951, he moved to India where, until 1966, he was the Dalai Lama's chief representative in New Delhi.

A remarkable record of the heroic sacrifices of the Tibetan people who risked their lives to live in freedom while preserving their cultural and religious values outside of occupied Tibet, the images depict the initial struggles and obstacles the Tibetan refugees faced. Thousands were employed in road building tasks, living in makeshift tents during the early years of their relocation.
