Platinum-selling Australian singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke, who was recently nominated for 3 ARIAs, may be developing an ever-growing hoard of devotees in the US for her viral hit, “Are You F*cking Kidding Me? (The Facebook Song)”, which has the Twitterati buzzing, but there is much more to her as her loyal dedicated following will attest. It’s the wonderfully unself-conscious yet accomplished songwriting that takes Kate to the next level and the experimental, hooky, unashamedly pop spirit of it. Following Miller-Heidke’s platinum record status and taking her home country by storm, she has begun her first extensive US tour opening for Ben Folds on a wide selection of dates as well as headlining club appearances in LA, Boston and NYC. Kate will be opening for Ben Folds next Friday, October 30th in Madison at the Overture Center.
Prior to the early 2010 stateside release of her chart-topping record "Curiouser" on SIN/Sony Australia, (which is currently #1 on the Australian national chart), she released her self-titled debut EP in the US on September 22nd. The 5 song EP is available digitally as well as on sale at venues in the tour markets. The EP includes 3 tracks from "Curiouser"; "Caught in the Crowd", "Politics in Space" and "The Last Day on Earth"; the 2007 ARIA nominated Breakthrough Single "Words", from her Australian debut record "Little Eve"; and the viral smash "Are You F*cking Kidding Me (The Facebook Song)".
After a trilogy of EPs from ’04 to ’06 – “Telegram”, “Comikaz” and “Circular Breathing” – Brisbane native Miller-Heidke, signed to Sony Australia and her debut album, "Little Eve", burst onto the scene in 2007 to land in the upper reaches of the ARIA charts and earned the singer a host of accolades. The album went gold and she clocked up four ARIA nominations; “Best Female Artist”, “Best Pop Release”, “Breakthrough Artist”, and “Best Album.” The producer of "Little Eve", Magoo, was also nominated for Producer Of The Year.
Kate’s sophomore record "Curiouser", which will be her US debut early in the new year, immediately struck a chord with fans and critics when it was released in Australia late last year and the platinum-selling album was Kate's first top 10 record, debuting at #6 on the ARIA Top 10 Albums chart and is her first record to go to #1 at iTunes.
"Curiouser", which began to take shape on a holiday in Laos shared by Miller-Heidke and her partner and guitartist/songwriter Keir Nuttall, was produced in Los Angeles with Mickey Petralia (Beck, Peaches, eels, Dandy Warhols), who had the right mix of humor, enthusiasm and weird old electronic stuff to offer the new tunes, Kate, Nuttall, bassist Ben McCarthy and drummer Steve Pope spent two months crafting. With his strict 4pm to 4am shifts (with no days off), Petralia's studio wizardry turned out to be the perfect galvanising force for Miller-Heidke’s and and Nuttall’s carefully detailed home demos.
On "Curiouser", it’s the first time she’s opened herself up to collaboration – here, working closely with her partner Nuttall. "Songwriting was always too personal and I felt too self-conscious to collaborate," Kate says. "But after a certain point with Keir, I just lost my inhibitions and I didn’t care. We got into a groove where we bring out the best of each other. These songs are better than anything we'd written individually before."
“Can't Shake It”, possibly the world’s first booty-swinging tune about a booty that just won't swing, was the first single off of Curiouser, and was eagerly devoured by a growing fan base. It became the most-added track to radio upon release and gave her her first Top 40 single. The icing on the cake was its nomination for the 2009 APRA Song of the Year.

Meanwhile, a very different song, “Caught In The Crowd” – a double-fisted tug of heartstrings between the gently tootling texture of the music and the recognizably real story of lingering childhood regret – shot to greater heights. Miller-Heidke made history as the first Australian to win the prestigious International Songwriting Competition grand prize, with “Caught In The Crowd” handpicked from more than 17,000 entries to woo judges including Tom Waits, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Neil Finn and The Kinks’ Ray Davies. The song shone with heart and soul – something indicative of "Curiouser", even in its most fun and playful moments.

The record’s third single, the emotionally-charged “The Last Day On Earth”, ideally surmised the universally resonating power of the record. A beautifully compelling tune, which perfectly captures the indestructible power of love in the most fragile and finite surrounds. It was viewed a phenomenal 200,000 times on YouTube in just four weeks, went gold, selling 50,500 copies, and became Miller-Heidke’s first #1 ARIA single.

The platinum status of "Curiouser" has cemented the Australian sensation as one of the country’s finest artists and thanks to the wildfire enthusiasm of fans on the internet, the news about Miller-Heidke is spreading across the US. Building on the unique vocal and performance dynamics learnt through early operatic training and a love of musical theatre, her shows are as affecting, fun and memorable as her songs.
