PROGRAM SYNOPSIS
Music from the Great American Songbook will light up the Top of the Park on the Capitol Square on Saturday, October 10th when the Madison Music Collective presents celebrated local vocalists Kelly DeHaven, Gerri DiMaggio and Marilyn Fisher in an evening of the popular and lesser-known songs of legendary 20th century American composer and lyricist Cole Porter. Porter’s sophisticated music includes classics like “Night and Day,” “Anything Goes,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Just One of Those Things,” “From This Moment On,” and so many more.
Accompanied by pianist Paul Hastil, bassist John Mesoloras and drummer Michael Brenneis, our featured vocalists will also offer a bit of a Porter retrospective, including information about the pieces being performed and little-known facts about Porter's life and music. With its panoramic view of the State Capitol and cabaret atmosphere, the Top of the Park offers the perfect setting for Porter’s sophisticated “uptown” music. Seating is limited and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended.
Cole Porter's music, like his life, is colorful, rich, and full of unexpected twists and turns, to say nothing of just being "De-Lovely." So, to "All of You" prospective audience members, we ask that "Night and Day" and even "In the Still of the Night," you remember that "You're The Top." "Let's Do It," "Let's Misbehave" in the splendor of the Top of the Park as we Collective-ly remember why Cole Porter's music is so "Easy to Love."
ABOUT THE MUSIC
In a world of songwriting teams consisting of composer and lyricist (Rodgers and Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, Lerner and Loewe, to name a few), Cole Porter was a rarity in that he had a talent for both melody and words. As a result, his works are an unusually effective marriage of music and lyric that serve the emotional meaning of his tunes.
Many of Porter’s pieces, like “Begin the Beguine” and “I Concentrate on You,” had unconventional structures that extended beyond the standard 32-bar form of most popular music. As a result, these pieces have an epic quality, both lyrically and musically, that one would associate with classical music or opera. Porter also had a command of harmony that he used adeptly to create powerful moods for his passionate lyrics or to lend a playful air for his irreverently clever ones. Such harmonies have made his music especially appealing to jazz musicians, providing a very rich basis for improvisation.
The cultural breadth that Porter draws on for his metaphors, from classical to popular, has Shakespearean dimensions. Yet, significantly, he serves up his images with a groove that has you tapping your toe... a truly heady concoction.
After exploring many of the nearly 1,000 Porter tunes, our performers chose two sets worth of music for their 10/10/09 concert. These include some well known masterpieces (e.g., “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “In the Still of the Night”) as well as some off-the-beaten-path gems (e.g., “Experiment,” “Chasing the Jinx Away”) as well as tunes that everyone knows but are surprised to learn that Cole Porter wrote them (“Don't Fence Me In”). Some of these pieces will be largely "untouched" by our performers while others will be tweaked in recognizable but fun and inventive ways.
Some of that winnowing process was a personal undertaking for each vocalist; finding tunes they related to the most, both lyrically and musically. Some of that process served putting together a varied program that is well-paced and will satisfy an audience with the familiar as well as surprise them with a Cole Porter tune they had not heard before. The resulting varied program will showcase all three vocalists on four of the numbers, pairing them off for another three, and including solo performances by each vocalist.
