StageQ is delighted to present two shows in February and March: "Gertrude Stein and a Companion" by Win Wells, and "The Story of My Life" by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, running in repertory from February 8 through March 9. If you've ever left a StageQ show and wished that you didn't have to wait so long for your next dose of Q, this is your chance to see two in one month!
"Gertrude Stein and a Companion" is directed by Autumn Shiley, and stars Katy Conley and Kathy Lynn Sliter. This extraordinary play won first prize at both the Edinburgh Festival and the Theatre Festival in Sydney, Australia, as well as the Vita Award in South Africa as Best Play. The play begins just after the death of Gertrude Stein. Her ghost returns to Alice B. Toklas and the genesis and development of their relationship is richly portrayed.
"Gertrude Stein and a Companion" captures the feeling, art, music and literature of Paris of those years, when Pablo and Ernest and Henri and all of Gertrude's friends spent their free time in the great writer's salon. The show flits back and forth in time as the actors play not only Gertrude and Alice but a host of famous people who were part of their lives.
"An imaginative and compelling entertainment." - Christian Science Monitor
"The evening is a joy...Brisk, fun and literate." - Gannett Newspapers
"The Story of My Life" is directed by Tara Ayres and music directed by Jake Aebly, with Matthew Fayfer as Thomas and Craig Alan Schlagel as Alvin. The musical follows their lifelong friendship and love. An authentic and affecting work, told through a series of songs in turn playful, touching and dramatic.
One New York critic predicted, "See if you don't find yourself moved to Google the name of some long-lost friend with whom you simply lost touch. The Story of My Life inspires us to reconnect with those who were part of the earliest chapters of our own life stories'." NY1's Roma Torre said "Partners Neil Bartram, who wrote the music and lyrics, and Brian Hill, who wrote the obviously Sondheim-inspired book, fine-tuned this work with a keen insight for those seemingly inconsequential moments in relationships that turn out to be magically momentous. Bartram's lovely songs resonate on many levels."
