The Rock County Historical Society, working in conjunction with the Historic Preservation Commission and historian Rich Fletcher have announced the 2014 schedule for the very popular Janesville Historic Walking Tours.
Running from June to October, each tour is a peek into the distinct neighborhoods of Janesville. Presented on select Saturdays in each month at 9 a.m., each tour lasts approximately one hour and is FREE to the public. Each tour has its own distinct starting point. No RSVP is required.
All geographic areas of Janesville are represented by the walking tours. From Courthouse Hill to the Look West neighborhood, the walking tours will provide participants with the stories, details of the homes and buildings, and anecdotes about the people that live there, showcasing the unique fabric of Janesville's local history.
"Promoting the distinct architecture and personality of Janesville is part of our larger mission of promoting Rock County's history, and these walking tours are central to that effort," says Michael Reuter, RCHS Executive Director.
"We are excited and honored to partner with the Commission and with Mr. Fletcher. These walking tours are engaging, educational, and helps people get to know their community and neighbors a little better."
Historian Rich Fletcher has been a champion of local history, donating time and resources to executing the tours over the last five years. "RCHS will be a great steward of the walking tours that have been so popular for over five years. The opportunity to offer tours more frequently and to expand tour offerings will only enhance the impact of the tours and bring RCHS out into the neighborhoods. This will also be a great opportunity for others in the community to come forward and be a part of this new program."
