Personal ESL Tutoring
This is a great volunteer opportunity for retirees and professional educators, who tend to be extremely successful in this program! Personal ESL Tutors work one-on-one with adults learning English on an independent basis, usually at their local library. This is a skilled position that requires a great deal of maturity, reliability, and self-direction.

Meeting times and locations are flexible; we match each tutor with someone who is available during the same times and can meet at a location that is convenient for you both. (The ESL learners on our waiting list are typically able to meet at the following Madison libraries: Hawthorne, Goodman, Sequoya and Meadowridge --few to none can meet downtown, on campus, or on the near eastside.) All tutoring is done in English so volunteers are not required to speak any other languages.

Once trained and matched, personal Tutors are responsible for:

Scheduling weekly tutoring sessions
Writing weekly lesson plans that work toward the student's specific goals
Tutoring their learner for 2 hours every week
Submitting quarterly Tutor Reports (we have an easy online form)

Each Personal Tutor is required to:

Have one of the following:
3+ years of experience as an educator (teacher, trainer, or tutor) OR
2+ years of volunteering experience with reference OR
completed one semester of tutoring in Community Literacy
Fluently speak, read, and write English
Attend an Orientation and all sessions of Personal Tutor training
Commit to working at least 50 hours (about 6 months) with your assigned learner
Possess reliable transportation to/from the tutoring site

Once your application is accepted, you are required to attend Orientation/Training, which is split into 4 sessions. Here are your choices:

October ESL Tutor Orientation/Training (Thursday nights; all 4 sessions must be attended)
5:30-6:15pm Thursday, October 2 (Orientation)
5:30-8:00pm Thursday, October 9 (Training part one)
5:30-8:00pm Thursday, October 23 (Training part two)
5:30-8:00pm Thursday, October 30 (Training part three)
