The Madison Police Department has used trained canines for about 10 years to help prevent and solve crimes. In addition to tracking criminals and missing people, Madison's seven police K9s assist in drug busts and building searches for criminals or contraband. If necessary, they also help apprehend a suspect who is not cooperating with police.
Isthmus contributor Mary Ellen Bell reported on the Madison Police Department's K9 Unit and how its dogs are trained and utilized by officers in the August 21 issue, and discussed her story with WORT producer Dylan Brogan on that day's edition of In Our Backyard.
