The Field & Stream Deer & Turkey Expo is ideal for anybody who really knows where their meat comes from, i.e., those who hunt turkey and deer. Running over three days, this 28 annual expo encompasses exhibits, seminars, demonstrations, contests, and live animal displays. Bill Hesselgrave will demonstrate how to butcher and process venison in one daily session, while others will cover everything from turkey vocalizations to trail cameras. Animals are likewise the central focus of the Spay-ghetti & No Balls Dinner, a benefit in support of Shelter From the Storm and its program to spay and neuter pets. The meal lives up to its name -- that's right, no meatballs, and the spaghetti is vegetarian. It's followed by an open house at the Spay Me! Clinic, where attendees can will find a bake sale, a raffle and silent auction, info booths, and tours. An article in last week's Isthmus details the work of the rescue. Beer -- great beer -- is just a part of life here in Wisconsin. There were some lean times, though, after Big Beer put smaller hometown breweries out of business. Now the craft beer movement has small brewers on the rise again. That story will be told at a screening of Comeback: The Wisconsin Beer Movie. Filmmaker Tim Tynan and brewmaster Tanner Brethorst of the forthcoming Port Huron Brewing Company will attend and speak about their work. April 1

The Polish Heritage Club Spring Festival looks like a good bet. Beyond traditional Easter eggs and the sale of Polish baked goods, there will be a luncheon featuring the Polish sausage kielbasa, and the darling dumplings called pierogi, which are often filled with cheese, or potato, or meat, or sauerkraut, or some combo of the above. Heavenly. The Polish Heritage Club of Wisconsin-Madison throws this party annually on Palm Sunday, with all of the food accompanied by Easter egg displays, imported crafts for sale, live music, and children's activities.
